Deputy President William Ruto came face to face with victims of attacks in Lamu West and listened as they emotionally recounted their harrowing experience in the hands of criminals who terrorised them for hours in Hindi Village on Saturday night before killing their kin.

The Deputy President ordered the top security team in Nairobi to travel to Lamu and the Tana Delta to take charge of the investigations and the general security situation in the area until normalcy returns.

Mr Ruto noted that the attempt by criminal elements and their collaborators to blackmail the government would fail miserably, adding that the government would prevail no matter what the criminal elements did.

Deputy President William Ruto came face to face with victims of attacks in Lamu West and listened as they emotionally recounted their harrowing experience in the hands of criminals who terrorised them for hours in Hindi Village on Saturday night before killing their kin.

The Deputy President whose initial mission in Lamu was to visit the scene of killings that left 65 people dead four weeks ago, found himself in a different but related mission.

He had been scheduled to attend an inter-faith service at Lake Kenyatta Primary School in Mpeketoni, but had to change his plans to visit Hindi and Gamba villages in Tana River counties where more than 20 people were killed by marauding gangs on Saturday night.

Muddy village paths

The Deputy President spent most of the afternoon visiting the 12 affected families in their homes — walking through muddy village paths — to console the families in this rural farming area. He first made a stopover at Gamba Police Station.

Accompanied by Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, his Tana River counterpart Hussein Dado and Lamu county commissioner Njenga Miiri, Mr Ruto walked through the bushy paths to the homes of the victims in Mareranda Village and witnessed the gory scene which was littered with bodies of the victims, most of whom had their hands been tied behind before they were killed.

He condoled with the bereaved families and assured them that the government would beef up security in the area to protect their lives and property.

Mr Ruto expressed dismay at the senseless loss of human lives and instructed the Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo to ensure that the perpetrators of the killings are quickly arrested and charged.

He said: “We must arrest the attackers. The IG, county commander, the OCPD must arrest the attackers dead or alive. We cannot condone this act.”

The DP who was also accompanied by Lamu Senator Abu Chiaba and Women Representative Shakila Abdalla said the government had mobilised all the security agencies to protect the area.

Mr Ruto who later held a security meeting at Hindi, put the Lamu county security team led by county commissioner Njenga Miiri to task on what measures they had taken to contain the escalating lawlessness in the area.

The Deputy President ordered the top security team in Nairobi to travel to Lamu and the Tana Delta to take charge of the investigations and the general security situation in the area until normalcy returns.

“We have deployed security and enough vehicles in this area,” he said and added, “Intelligence reports indicated there would be an attack in Likoni, Mtwapa, but we want to warn those people trying to make Kenya ungovernable that they will not succeed,” he said.

Mr Ruto noted that the attempt by criminal elements and their collaborators to blackmail the government would fail miserably, adding that the government would prevail no matter what the criminal elements did.

“We will not allow a few people to make this country ungovernable. This country will defeat the criminals,” he emphasised.

He reminded the Kenyans that just as the security agents contained and defeated attempts to cause mayhem in Mtwapa, Kisauni and Likoni, they would also overcome these latest episodes.

Mr Dadho asked wananchi in the area to report criminals to the authorities, noting that the faceless enemy that was destabilising the area must be defeated.

In Mpeketoni in the meantime, hundreds of residents took to the streets to protest against the fresh killings and the deteriorating security in the area.
