Armed men attacked two police checkpoints on a Mediterranean highway popular with beach goers, resulting in nine deaths

An Egyptian police officer, four conscripts and four militants died on Tuesday in clashes on the Matrouh road between security forces and armed assailants, a security source told Al-Ahram's Arabic news website.

The road - a busy highway running along Egypt's Mediterranean coast that connects several popular tourist resorts and leads to the Libyan border - has now been closed due to the clashes, interior ministry spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif said.

A security source told Al-Ahram that the shootings occurred when militants attacked two separate security checkpoints on the Matrouh road.

The first attack resulted in the killing of officer Tarek Mohamed Sameh and the four conscripts. The assailants were then killed when they opened fire on another security checkpoint on the same road.

Earlier, Mostafa Darwish, an aide to the interior minister, told Al-Ahram that security forces had received information from National Security that a car full of arms and explosives would be on the Matrouh-Alamein road.

The clashes took place near the upscale coastal resort Marina, a popular destination for local tourism.

A wave of militant attacks has been on the rise since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July of last year, with over 500 security personnel killed.
