President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi tells Sharm conference his country is determined to overcome its difficulties

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said Sunday his country needs hundreds of billions of dollars to "produce real hope" for its people.

In his closing speech at the Economic Development Conference, which El-Sisi delivered as young organisers stood around him on stage, the president said Egypt needs "no less than 200-300 billion dollars" to rebuild itself.

He said that "a lot of efforts" are exerted, but results are not evident yet because the demand is high.

However, he emphasised that his country is determined to overcome its difficulties.

"People thought my country had died. But no, Egypt is a country God created for life... I remind Egyptians and the world that Egypt is awakening now," he said.

El-Sisi pointed out that Egypt pressured international companies to shorten the originally-proposed timeframes for completing the planned projects.

"Time is crucial. We need to complete the proposed projects soon."

In addition, he said that his government made efforts to cut the costs of projects proposed at the conference.

He urged Egyptians to work a "thousand times more" with each other and in the new projects signed at the conference.

El-Sisi also announced that Egypt will hold a similar economic conference annually and invited all attendees to visit again next year.

"[This conference will be] not just for Egypt, but also for other economically-struggling countries," he said.

Egypt held the conference from 13-15 March in the resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh.

It has signed deals worth a total of $38.2 billion and MOUs for potential deals worth $92 billion, Reuters quoted the Minister of Investment Ashraf Salman.

In addition, Gulf leaders pledged $12.5 billion.

The first two days of the conference were praised as a 'success' for Cairo by a number of world leaders in attendance.

Around 2,000 delegates from 112 nations, including 30 heads of state and executives of multinational companies, attended the event.

During the conference Egypt launched its plan for a new administrative capital east of Cairo at a cost of $45 billion.

In his closing remarks El-Sisi thanked everyone who attended and contributed to the conference.

He said the Egyptian people were able to bring about change on 25 January and 30 June.

"And they are able to bring about change again. ButI will not wait till this happens," he said, in reference to uprisings against Hosni Mubarak and Mohamed Morsi.

Young people posed for a selfie with the president, and other attendees, including ministers, joined in for a photograph.
