Former Sports Minister, Malam Bolaji Abdulahi and PDP Deputy Governorship candidate in Kwara, Alhaji Yinka Aluko, on Saturday described 2015 general elections as peaceful and unprecedented in Nigeria history.

Abdullahi and Aluko, in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin after casting their votes at the Governorship and House of Assembly elections, said the elections had been successful and peaceful.

The former Minister said that the 2015 general elections were the first time the people of Nigeria were able to show that power belongs to them.

He said the elections had established the fact that power can also be changed through the ballot.

“Now it will be impossible for any government to take the people for granted, in the past, people used to be afraid of government, reverse is the case now,” Abdullahi said.

According to Aluko, the 2015 elections have exposed the people to the fact that electorate has the power to effect a change of government in the country.

He said, more than ever before, Nigerians have realised the power in their votes and that they are the real custodians of power.

Aluko said that the uniqueness of the 2015 general election was that government in power would now be afraid of the people and live up to their expectations.

Tinubu condemns spate of violence in South-South

By NAN on April 11, 2015

Former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Saturday condemned the spate of violence during the governorship and state assembly polls in the South-South geo-political zone of the country.

Tinubu, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the observation while addressing journalists at Sunday Adigun Street, Alausa, where he cast his vote.

The former governor described the continued violence reported in the South South as barbaric.

He believed that the violence and threats may have caused the low voter turnout in several parts of the country.

“We have to remove violence from our politics. Election is about people and service, it is not a process of gun, war and violence.

“It is power by all means necessary that is the cause of the violence and we have to remove that and allow the process to function

“We must nurture the process of democracy, respect the rule of law and lives and property of Nigerians.

“The attempt to be governor or control states should come from the people’s sovereignty; the right of the people to choose their own leaders,” he said.

Tinubu commended INEC for the smooth process of accreditation, saying it would boost voter confidence.

“Accreditation has been better than two weeks ago, I got accredited at the first attempt.

“The organisation of the voting process is commendable. The only thing that we will be looking out for in the future is to help INEC improve as an institution.

“The card reader is now more dependable,” he said.
