INEC Assures Electorate of Credibility of Nigerian Poll Results

By NAN on April 11, 2015

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday assured electorate in Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun that their votes would not be tampered with.

The commission’s Electoral Officer in the area, Mr Kayode Olaniyi, gave the assurance while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the ballots collation centre in Ijebu-Ode

Olaniyi commended the peaceful conduct of the voters and said that the commission would be a good umpire in the exercise.

“Any politician that tries to induce my judgment with cash or kind in his or her favour is only wasting his or her time.

“I can assure you that results which have not been tampered with at the polling unit level can never be altered once it leaves the unit for collation.

“This is why we admonish the electorate to always defend their votes and the party agents to get copies of results collated at the units,” he said.

Olaniyi explained that the Electoral Law made provision for the elderly to be assisted during elections, to minimise invalid votes and ballot paper wastage.

He, however, stated that most people did not take advantage law, because some miscreants tended to exploit the situation illegally.

He urged the people to support the electoral system by always exercising their franchise at polls, saying such would strengthen democracy in the country.

NAN reports that Ijebu-Ode comprised 11 Wards and 98 Polling Units, most of which collation of the polling results was taking place as at 7.30 p.m.
