Cuban and Venezuelan delegates left the forum in protest over the participation of individuals with a history of belonging to Cuban counter-revolutionary groups. Venezuelan and Cuban delegations withdrew from a Summit of the Americas side forum Wednesday in protest to the list of participants.

The Cuban delegation decided to withdraw from the Hemispheric Civil Society and Social Actors forum (April 8-10), because its organizers rejected the inclusion of other Cuban participants.

The statement released about the issue said those excluded “do not represent the civil society of Cuba and among these are those who enjoy a friendship with terrorists.” The Venezuelan delegation withdrew in solidarity with the Cubans. One of Cuba’s delegates, legislator Luis Morlote, said, “The representatives of the true civil society have left the meeting room because we will not share the space with representatives of a supposed civil society which is not ours, which is paid (for).”

Following his withdrawal, Morlote explained, “we have already requested from the organizers that these individuals not be allowed into the room, which do not represent Cuban civil society...”

“We cannot be in the same space … There cannot be mercenaries who call themselves representatives of civil society. It is inadmissible,” Morlote added.

The delegation suggested nonetheless that it will participate in the forum’s roundtables, meeting until April 10. The Cuban delegation also issued a complaint that it was not provided with credentials for the forum.

In contrast, at least 20 counter-revolutionary Cubans have received credentials to participate. This forum is being organized in parallel to the Summit of the Americas, along with several other parallel forums, in order to discuss issues relating to the Americas and civil society. As well as the civil society forum, the Young Americas forum (April 8 and 9) also begins Wednesday.

Both of these forums will include right-wing members of civil society, who organize to oppose the policies of many of the leftist governments of Latin America.
